This course is open to students on the college level in either the freshman or sophomore year and to area high school vocational students.
Catalog Description:
WEL3638 WELDING MATERIALS INSPECTION & TESTING (3 hrs.)
Students will be introduced to the basics of inspection and testing techniques in the welding industry used on welds and materials to meet codes and standards set by the industry to meet the needs of aircraft, structural and pipe.

Controlling Purpose:
This course is designed to help the student increase their knowledge regarding fundamentals of industrial related techniques, tools used, terminology, materials, mathematics and practices in welding inspection.
Learner Outcomes:

Knowledge of terminology and its meaning, as related to inspection procedures used in the welding industry.

Be able to apply basic understanding of different materials used in the welding industry.

Solve basic problems, apply basic technical knowledge, exhibit teamwork, perform basic mathematics, and apply critical thinking.

Apply safety principles in a work environment to minimize hazards and prevent losses to productivity.

Demonstrate basic proficiency in reading and understanding technical documents and blueprints.

Define different welding processes and its relation to weld strenghts.

UNIT 1: INTRODUCTION TO METALS
Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to explain basic metal makeup and properties.

Demonstrate the basic knowledge processes in forming metals.

Define and use terminology related to the required metal used in welding.

List and explain steps used in the creation of various metals.

Describe the basic effects in heat treating materials.
-
List and describe the effects welding, brazing and soldering has on materials.
UNIT 2: INTRODUCTION TO CODES AND PRACTICES
Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the student should have a basic understanding of codes and practices used in welding inspection.

Demonstrate a basic knowledge of federal and state codes used in welding inspection.

Define how following codes and regulations affect public safety.

Identify and explain codes and standards used in weld inspections.
UNIT 3: INTRODUCTION TO VISUAL INSPECTION
Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to explain and use welding procedure data sheets (WPDS) and blueprints.

Demonstrate basic knowledge of visual inspection procedures.

Recognize different tools and processes used in visual inspection.

Define terminology and procedures used in visual inspection processes.

Demonstrate a knowledge of welding parameters and ranges for welding specific joint, material thickness, and weld size described or illustrated on data sheet.

List and describe techniques used in performing successful visual inspection.
UNIT 4: INTRODUCTION TO RAIDIOGRAPHIC TESTING
Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to use and describe the equipment and materials needed in the testing of welds using radiographic processes.

Exhibit basic safety protocols.

Identify basic tools and equipment needed and used for weld inspection with the above process.

Describe and explain each step of the process in the operation of equipment.

Demonstrate how equipment and tools are to be used safely and properly.
UNIT 5: INTRODUCTION TO MAGNETIC PARTICAL, ULTRASONIC & EDDY CURRENT TESTING METHODS
Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to use and describe the equipment and materials needed in the testing of welds using magnetic particle, ultrasonic and eddy current procedures.

Identify basic tools and equipment needed and used for weld inspection with the above processes.

Describe and explain each step of the process in the operation of equipment.

Demonstrate how equipment and tools are to be used safely and properly.

Identify and read results from the testing operation to make determination of quality.
UNIT 6: GUIDED BEND, NECK BREAK & PRESSURE TESTING
Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to use and describe the equipment, materials and processes needed in the testing of welds using the listed processes.

Describe and explain each step of the process in the operation of equipment.

Demonstrate how equipment and tools are to be used safely and properly.

Demonstrate ability to prepare materials and welds for the test process.

Identify and interpret results.

Course Time Frame:
The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college. A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time. The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
