WEL3645 SPECIAL ALLOY WELDING

3 Credit Hours

Student Level:

This course is open to students on the college level in either the freshman or sophomore year and to area high school vocational students.

Catalog Description:

WEL3645 SPECIAL ALLOY WELDING (3 hrs.)

Students will be introduced to welding processes used on special and unique alloys. The process will include structural and pipe procedures.

Course Classification:

2 credits Lecture/1 credit Lab

Prerequisites:

None

Controlling Purpose:

This course is designed to help the students increase their knowledge regarding fundamentals of industrial related techniques, tools used, terminology, material preparation, mathematics and practices in welding of special alloy metals.

Learner Outcomes:

  1. Knowledge of terminology and its meaning as related to welding procedures and practices used in the welding industry for different alloy materials.
  2. Be able to apply basic understanding of different materials used in the welding industry.
  3. Solve basic problems, apply basic technical knowledge, exhibit teamwork, perform basic mathematics, and apply critical thinking in solving welding issues on different alloy welding materials.
  4. Apply safety principles in a work environment to minimize hazards and prevent losses to productivity.
  5. Demonstrate basic proficiency in reading and understanding technical documents and blueprints.
  6. Define different welding processes as it relates to the type of metal used.

Unit Outcomes for Criterion Based Evaluation:

The following outline defines the minimum core content not including the final examination period. Instructors may add other material as time allows.

UNIT 1: Alloy Identification

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to explain basic metal makeup and properties.

  • Demonstrate the basic knowledge processes in cutting material in accordance to specifications and tolerances set for desired results and metal makeup.
  • List and explain different types of cutting procedures and when each should be used on which type of alloy.
  • Define and use terminology related to alloy type and process.
  • List and explain steps used in product preparation.
  • Describe the basics of effects and need for grinding materials.
  • List and describe the effects and types of materials used in the grinding process.

UNIT 2: Precautions in Alloy 

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the student should have a basic understanding of safety and concerns related to welding different types and combinations of alloy materials.

  • Explain safety procedures used in welding various alloys.
  • Demonstrate a basic knowledge of tools, equipment and welding processes to be used with each alloy type.
  • Define terms and processes.
  • Identify and list various precautions when welding special alloys.

 

UNIT 3: Filler Metal Requirements in Special Alloys

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to explain and select proper filler metals for different alloy materials.

  • Exhibit basic knowledge of filler metal.
  • Determine codes and standards to meet desired results.
  • Demonstrate basic knowledge of different types of filler materials and which alloy they work with.
  • Determine the weldability of the filler metal to the needed alloy.
  • Recognize different tools and processes used in the welding process for different alloys.
  • Determine and explain welding procedures used for welding each type of alloy as it relates to the filler material.
  • Demonstrate a knowledge of welding parameters and ranges for welding specific joint, material thickness, and weld size for each process.
  • List and describe techniques used in preforming successful welds as it relates to specific filler metal.

UNIT 4: Steps in Welding Different Alloys

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to explain and preform welding process on different materials.

  • Exhibit basic safety protocols.
  • Determine codes and standards to meet desired results.
  • Demonstrate basic knowledge of different types of materials.
  • Determine the weldability of the alloy.
  • Recognize different tools and processes used in welding different alloys.
  • Determine and explain welding procedures used for welding each type of alloy.
  • Demonstrate a knowledge of welding parameters and ranges for welding specific joint, material thickness, and weld size for each process.
  • List and describe techniques used in preforming successful welds.

Course Time Frame:

The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college.  A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time.  The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
