CGA 2064 - PORTFOLIO PRODUCTION

1 Credit Hour

Student Level:

This course is open to students on the college level in either the Freshman or Sophomore year.


Catalog Description:

CGA2064 Portfolio Production (1 hr.)

This is a capstone course for students majoring in graphic design. As part of this course, students will evaluate the previous work, improve upon it, and curate it to create a professional design portfolio. Students will research future potential education or career options and outline a plan to explore them. Students will develop interviewing and presentation skills to aid in job placement.

Prerequisites:

The student must have completed at least six credit hours of design coursework or instructor approval.

Co-requisites:

NONE

Controlling Purpose:

This is a capstone course for students majoring in graphic design. As part of this course, students will evaluate their previous work, improve upon it, and curate it to create a professional design portfolio. Students will research future potential education or career options and outline a plan to explore them. Students will develop interviewing and presentation skills to aid in job placement.

Learner Outcomes:

Upon completion of the course, the student will:

  • Critique, evaluate, and curate previous work
  • Improve previous work for inclusion in a design portfolio
  • Create a digital portfolio
  • Create a physical portfolio
  • Develop interview and presentation skills
  • Participate in a portfolio evaluation by a professional in the field of their major

Unit Outcomes for Criterion Based Evaluation:

The following outline defines the minimum core content not including the final examination period.  Instructors may add other material as time allows.

UNIT 1: Evaluation and Selection of Personal Work

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to evaluate and curate their previous work

  • Evaluate and curate personal work for inclusion in their portfolio
  • Participate in critiques of selected work
  • Make corrections and adjustments to selected works

UNIT 2: Professional Preparation

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to plan for their future education or career.

  • Research future potential career or education options
  • Develop a plan and draft a paper based on research of potential career or education options
  • Practice and refine job interview and presentation skills

UNIT 3: Portfolio Production

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to create physical and digital versions of their portfolio

  • Convert work into digital formats if needed through scanning or photography
  • Color correct or enhance digital images of portfolio pieces
  • Create a digital presentation of work
  • Print and mount physical versions of student work to create a physical portfolio

Projects Required:

This course will require the creation of a research paper covering future education or career plans. The final for the class is a presentation of a student’s final portfolio - as such, leading up to the presentation, the student will be required to curate the work that goes into the portfolio and create both digital and physical versions.

Materials/Equipment Required:

  • The students will require the same design tools that were utilized to create their projects in previous classes.
  • A method to save and back-up work such as a flash drive, external hard drive, or access to an online cloud storage service

Course Time Frame:

The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college.  A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time.  The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
