Catalog Description:
CST3247 - Introduction to 3D Construction Principles (5 hrs.)
Students will learn and apply the fundamentals of 3D Construction including the following: the history of 3D Construction, types of printing solutions, various printing techniques, components of 3D Construction, material science and mixing, and the use of software to program the 3D Construction robots and basic software for design used in 3D Construction. Students will have hands-on application in the 3D Construction process.

Controlling Purpose:
This course is designed to help students increase their knowledge regarding fundamentals of 3D Construction related construction techniques, equipment and software used, terminology, materials, and construction practices.
Learner Outcomes:
Upon completion of the course, the student will:
- Knowledge of terminology and the meanings as related to 3D Construction
- Be able apply basic OSHA guidelines for compliance
- Solve basic problems, apply basic technical knowledge, exhibit teamwork, preform basic operational activities, and apply critical thinking
- Apply safety principles in a work environment to minimize hazards and prevent losses to productivity
- Demonstrate basic proficiency in mix control and 3D Construction activities

UNIT 1: Introduction of 3D Construction and Safety Principles
Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to apply terminology and safety principles to the construction process.
- Describe the history of 3D printing and 3D Construction.
- Demonstrate a knowledge of, define and use of 3D Construction related terminology.
- Identify basic tools and equipment used in 3D Construction and demonstrate how they are used.
- List personal and job skills needed to be successful in 3D Construction fields.
- Identify opportunities found in the use of 3D construction within the construction industry.
- Describe employee and employers’ responsibilities in the construction field to promote safety and good work ethics.
- Identify and describe the characteristics of professionalism.
UNIT 2: Overview of 3D Construction Software
Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to read basic prints related to 3D Construction.
- Convert digital 3D models into printing instructions for a given 3D printer to build objects.
- Enter 3D printing parameters, such as layer height, speed, and support structure settings to build objects.
- Integrate basic principles of 3D vs 2D Design.
UNIT 3: 3D Construction Material & Mix Properties
Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to work with construction mix related to 3D Construction.
- Recall the material options for 3D Construction and future possibilities.
- Discuss the appropriate mix design properties and mix testing for 3D Construction.
- Compare the characteristics of different print materials and key structural considerations for 3D Construction.
UNIT 4: Managing a 3D Construction Project
Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to apply the principles of 3D Construction to a work site.
- Organize the principles required for a successful 3D Construction project.
- Manage the 3D Print Process from the planning phase to completion for a work site.
- Defend the importance of cleaning during and after the 3D print.

Course Time Frame:
The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college. A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time. The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
