CIS 1919 - WINDOWS SERVER ACTIVE DIRECTORY
3 Credit Hours

This course is open to students on the college level in either the Freshman or Sophomore year.

Catalog Description:

CIS1919 - Windows Server Active Directory (3 hrs.)

This course will introduce students to installing, configuring, and maintaining Active Directory Domain Services, managing Active Directory objects, group policies, certificate services, identify federation, access solutions, service authentication, and account policies.

Controlling Purpose:

This course covers the knowledge and skills needed to plan, implement, and troubleshoot a Microsoft Windows Server Active Directory infrastructure. The course covers Windows Server directory service environment, including forest and domain structure, Domain Name System, site topology and replication, organizational structure and delegation of administration, Group Policy, user, group and computer account implementations.

Upon completion of the course, the student will:

  2. Manage Active Directory Objects
  3. Manage and Maintain AD DS
  4. Create and Manage Group Policy
  5. Create Group Policy Settings
  6. Implement Active Directory Certificate Services
  7. Implement Identity Federation and Access Solutions
  8. Configure Service Authentication and Account Policies
  9. Explore Active Directory in the Enterprise

UNIT 1: Install and Configure Active Directory Domain Services

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to:

  • Install and configure domain controllers
  • Deploying Active Directory
  • Create and manage Active Directory users and computers
  • Create and manage Active Directory groups and Organizational Units (OUs)
  •  Manage AD objects

UNIT 2: Managing Active Directory Objects

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to:

  • Automate account creation and bulk AD operations
  • Configure and manage user accounts
  • Perform AD management tasks
  • Create and customer objects using templates
  • Manage logon times and other user properties
  • Configure policies

UNIT 3: Manage and Maintain AD DS

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to:

  • Configure service authentication and account policies
  • Maintain Active Directory
  • AD sites and services
  • Configure Active Directory in a complex enterprise environment
  • Metadata configuration/AD object recovery
  • Child domains and subnets
  • Implement IP address management

UNIT 4: Create and Manage Group Policy

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to:

  • Create and manage group policy objects
  • Configure group policy processing
  • Perform GPO Management
  • Configure group policy settings and preferences
  • Client-Side extensions and GPO forced updates
  • Perform group policy filtering

UNIT 5: Group Policy Settings

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to:

  • Script software installations and group policy scripting
  • Explore templates
  • Use group policy templates
  • Perform folder redirection
  • Configure GP client firewall and security settings
  • Implement group policy client settings

UNIT 6: Implement Active Directory Certificate Services

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to:

  • Create digital certificates
  • Manage certificates
  • Deploy Certificate Server
  • Create certificates and group policy
  • Perform certificate revocation
  • Perform certificate service tasks

UNIT 7: Implement Identity Federation and Access Solutions

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to:

  • Implement identity federation and access solutions
  • Implement Web Application Proxy (WAP)
  • Perform Active Directory Rights Management Services (AD RMS)
  • Explore Authentication
  • Implement federations services

UNIT 8: Configure Service Authentication and Account Policies

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to:

  • Configure services accounts
  • Configure group managed service accounts
  • Manage service principal names
  • Perform virtual account management
  • Implement Kerberos

UNIT 9: Active Directory in the Enterprise

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to:

  • Define multi-master domains
  • Explore AD domain and forest functional levels

Course Time Frame:

The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college.  A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time.  The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
