THE2738 - Introduction to Theatrical Design
3 Credit Hours

Student Level:

This course is open to students on the college level in either the Freshman or Sophomore year.

Catalog Description:

THE2738- Introduction to Theatrical Design (3 hrs.)

This course will provide students with an opportunity to apply their creative abilities in designing for the theatre. Students will learn the basics of the design process, how to collaborate with a director, research, and apply that newfound knowledge within the context of the script.

Controlling Purpose:

The purpose of this course is to introduce the theory and practice of theatre design and the standards of entertainment technology. This course focuses on understanding foundational elements of theatrical design and developing the skills to translate text into visual content. It involves script analysis, research, creative exploration, and visual communication. Emphasis will be on the processes and practices used in designing for the performing arts.

Learner Outcomes:

Upon completion of the course, the student will:

  1. Create basic scenic, lighting, properties, and projection designs for the stage.
  2. Complete a portfolio of their design work from the course.
  3. Read and draw a variety of two-dimensional scale drawings.
  4. Render basic three-dimensional scale drawings and white models.
  5. Read and use the industry-wide graphics and standards in the performing arts, as set down by the United States Institute for Theatre Technology Inc. (USITT).

Unit Outcomes for Criterion Based Evaluation:

The following outline defines the minimum core content not including the final examination period.  Instructors may add other material as time allows.

UNIT 1: The Fundamentals of Design

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to effectively articulate the fundamentals of design as it refers to scenic, lighting, properties, and projection elements.

  • Explore the role of a scenic, lighting, property and projection designer
  • Describe what is involved in conducting script analysis as a designer.
  • Prepare research with 1st and 2nd source examples.

UNIT 2:  Basic Artistic Composition

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to identify and implement the basic principles of artistic composition through designs.

  • Learn the elements of art and principle of design.
  • Articulate design principles applied to works of art.
  • Use basic color theory.

UNIT 3: Basic Drafting Techniques and Standards

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to demonstrate and articulate the basic standards and techniques of drafting through scale drawings, ground plans, and CAD drafting.

  • Identify scale drawings and ground plans and the percentage scale used.
  • Describe the process by which scale drawings, renderings, and drafting is done.
  • Demonstrate basic drafting techniques in both hand drafting and CAD formats.

UNIT 4: Scenic and Properties Design

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to fully realize a scenic and properties design for a production including research, drafting, CAD renderings, and scale modeling.

  • Comprehend the process of scenic design.
  • Create scenic renderings.
  • Prepare scenic and properties projects.

UNIT 5: Lighting and Projection Design

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to fully realize a lighting and projection design through industry standard methods.

  • Comprehend the process of lighting design.
  • Execute and read light plots and circuit sheets.
  • Identify and utilize color mixing theory for light.
  • Prepare lighting and projection project through QLab and ETC.

Course Time Frame:

The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college.  A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time.  The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
