Course Descriptions


Cowley College has nearly 600 courses approved by the Kansas Board of Regents which coincide with the many pathways and programs of study that lead towards a degree, vocational certificate, or industry recognized credential or skill. Cowley advisors will help you design a program to meet your educational and career goals.

Refer to 2018-2019 Cowley College “Programs of Study ” to determine the course requirements and recommended elective courses for each degree or certificate for each specified pathway. Not all courses are offered each semester. Students should visit with their advisor for information on courses that are offered on a rotational basis.

Kansas Regents Shared Number (KRSN)

Courses that currently have a Kansas Regents Shared Number (Common Course Numbers designated by the Kansas System Wide Transfer Course Matrix) are indicated by their associated KRSN number. The learning outcomes and competencies in these courses meet or exceed the learning outcomes and competencies specified by the Kansas Core Outcomes Groups project for these courses as approved by the Kansas Board of Regents. 

The Kansas Board of Regents has approved and faculty representatives from Kansas public postsecondary institutions have agreed upon the learning outcomes for the systemwide transfer of specified courses.  A student who completes any of these courses at a Kansas public university, community college, or technical college will be able to transfer the course to any Kansas public institution offering an equivalent course.

    This course covers the proper application of the scientific processes and techniques to aid in establishing the identification of evidence submitted to the lab.   • CRJ5484 - Criminal Justice Internship I

    Elective Type: Elective
    This course is a supervised internship of 40 hours with a governmental agency, within the criminal justice field, chosen by the student with instructor approval. The course will be a combination of classroom learning with internship hours designed to provide a learning experience that integrates and applies knowledge and skills derived from the criminal justice curriculum and illustrates how that knowledge is applied to everyday work situations.

  • CRJ5495 - Introduction to Firearms

    Elective Type: Elective
    This course is designed for people ranging from inexperienced with firearms to a moderate level of firearm experience. Students will learn basic firearm safety and through this course they will be instructed on the basic operations of pistols, rifles, and shotguns. Through a combination of classroom, simulator and range training students will enhance their level of firearms knowledge and proficiency. This course is open to anyone enrolled at Cowley College.
    Prerequisite(s): Due to current State and Federal, laws restricting the access to firearms for people with certain convictions a background check will be required. External background checks conducted within six months of the class start date and presented to the instructor will be accepted.

    This course identifies the creative and educational needs of children from infancy to six years of age. Students will address developmental and educational standards for art, music, language, literature, science, math and social concepts through the use of toys, dramatic play, enrichment activities, etc. Students will create a professional portfolio of lesson plans and activities based upon the theories and best practices learned in previous early childhood courses. This professional portfolio can be utilized during field experiences and clinical practice.

    Students will gain hands-on experience in actually working with children. This class will provide 150 clock hours in the care of young children.

    Student will complete 150 contract hours working with children in a state licensed Child Care Facility, complete a packet of course work, provided by the instructor, and schedule two observations from the instructor at the facility in which their field work is completed.

    This is an extension of EDU6211 - Introduction to Teaching Profession  course and provides an opportunity for hands-on experiences in a PreK-12 classroom. Students are required to complete 25 hours in the field during the semester and reflect upon topics and issues presented in the EDU 6211  course.

    This course is designed to introduce students to the impact of technology on the field of education and the best practices for implementing technology in the learning environment. Students will gain a broad perspective of Educational Technology through the study of various view points and usage within today’s classroom. Best practices for integrating technology into the classroom to enhance the learning process will be a significant focus and will be closely aligned with the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) National Educational Technology Standards for Teacher (NETS-T) and Students (NETS-S).
    Prerequisite(s): Recommend students complete CAP1516 - Computer Applications  as a prerequisite. Recommend that Education Majors take this course during their sophomore year after having completed EDU6211 - Introduction to Teaching Profession (with required field experience).

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Paramedic Program

    The purpose of Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) course is to provide students with an academic and working knowledge to become Kansas certified and to provide basic life support patient care. It provides the basic concepts of emergency care, which are needed to function as an EMT. This class will be helpful for other health care fields and is a prerequisite for the Paramedic course.
    Prerequisite(s): Student must meet required Reading assessment test or ACT Reading score of 18 or higher; Associate degree or higher to waive the assessment test. At the start of the course, each student will be required to have a background check completed.

  • EMS5656 - Critical Care Emergency Medical Transport Program Sm

    This course is designed to prepare paramedics and nurses to function as members of a critical care transport team. Critical patients requiring transport between facilities need a different level of care from hospital or emergency field patients. Upon completion of the course, the student will gain an understanding of the special needs of critical patients during transport, become familiar with the purpose and mechanisms of hospital procedures and equipment, and develop the skills to maintain the stability of hospital equipment and procedures during transport.

  • EMS5681 - Paramedic 1

    Elective Type: Technical Elective
    This course provides students with an understanding of airway management, patient assessment, preparatory EMS topics, anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, medication administration, EMS research and medical terminology. This is the first course of the paramedic technical curriculum and helps prepare the student for progression through the program. The student will develop competencies in the application of the principles of pre-hospital emergency care, anatomy and physiology, and pharmacology. Patient assessment, airway management, and pharmacological skills will be developed and improved so that the student can successfully care for a patient.
    Prerequisite(s): BIO4150 - Human Anatomy and Physiology , ENG2211 - Composition I , ENG2212 - Composition II , NCH6214 Paramedic Preparation and student selected to enter the paramedic program.     This course provides students with an understanding of electrocardiography, cardiology, and resuscitation. Students also gain a functional knowledge of the principles, concepts, pathophysiology and treatment modalities for medical and trauma emergencies commonly encountered by the paramedic, as well as an understanding of EMS operations, MCIs, and other pertinent topics. The student will develop competencies in interpreting and treating ECG rhythms, localizing myocardial infarction sites, and advanced patient resuscitation. Students will gain the ability to assess and manage patients with medical and/or trauma emergencies, and will develop competencies in EMS operations.

  • EMS5683 - Paramedic 3

    Elective Type: Technical Elective
    Students will be scheduled to perform in the hospital environment, psychiatric facilities and physicians’ offices approximately 40 hours each week. This class will typically require 11-12 weeks, depending upon hospital scheduling requirements. Nursing and other specialty units may be utilized, to include: Intensive Care Units, Operating and Post Anesthesia Recovery Room, Emergency Departments, Labor and Delivery Rooms, Pediatric Units, Psychiatric Unit, Endoscopy Lab, and Respiratory Therapy. Experience with body substance isolation, aseptic technique, childbirth, bandaging, immobilization, hemorrhage control, and other related procedures will be discussed and practiced. Upon completion, the training program aims to produce clinicians who have the competencies, knowledge, and professional skills to function as a Community Paramedic in a mobile integrated healthcare system. Course completers will receive a certificate of completion from Cowley College in Community Paramedic/Mobile Integrated Healthcare. The qualifications will be nationally and internationally recognized as an established system of care serving urban, rural, and frontier communities.

    Provides instruction in fundamental skills of coaching, individual and team play, organization of practices, and the handling of teams during the competitive seasons of basketball. Emphasis is placed on the ability of the coach to teach, exercise leadership, negotiate internal team problems, organize and communicate necessary information pertinent to team success, monitor team progress, utilize problem solving and decision making skills, maintain ethical standards and responsibility for team actions, and clearly demonstrate skills necessary for effective communication and motivation of the team.
