ART2146 CERAMICS I

3 Credit Hours

Student Level:

This course is open to students on the college level in either the Freshman or Sophomore year and to area high school vocational students.

Catalog Description:

ART2146 - Ceramics I (3 hrs.)

This is an introductory studio course introducing basic ceramic processes, materials, tools, and equipment. This course focuses on developing the skills and aesthetics relating to the different materials and processes used in creating ceramic pieces. Students will be introduced to handmade and wheel-thrown pottery techniques, glazing, and other methods of surface enrichment, stacking the kiln, and firing procedures. This course is open to all students and not restricted to art majors.

Controlling Purpose:

Ceramics I is designed for those who have had some previous experience in art, but it is not mandatory.  It is an introduction to laboratory practice in the principles and elements of three-dimensional design.

Learner Outcomes:

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to understand the techniques of ceramics from hand building to throwing on the wheel.

Unit Outcomes for Criterion Based Evaluation:

The following defines the minimum core content not including the final examination period. Instructors may add other content as time allows.

UNIT 1: Personal Management Skills

Outcomes: The students will attend class regularly, follow directions, and submit all assignments in a professional manner.

  • Attend class on a regular and timely basis.
  • Submit written work based on material covered in class in a clear, concise, logical manner with few grammatical errors.
  • Participate orally in class in a clear, concise, logical, respectful manner.
  • Submit completed assignments on or before due dates.
  • Understand and follow instructions.

UNIT 2: Introduction

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to understand and perform in good design.

  • Identify the design element and principles as applied to three dimensional design.
  • Understand the elements of design in ceramics.
  • Evaluate the principles of balance, proportion, variety and unity.

UNIT 3: Hand Build

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to successfully build forms in clay by hand.

  • Identify the methods for hand formed pottery.
  • Describe the methods and possibilities with limitations.
  • Evaluate the variety of techniques and styles.

UNIT 4: Wheel Throwing

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to successfully throw on the potter wheel.

  • Understand good technique in throwing.
  • Evaluate the influence of how to use the wheel.

Course Time Frame:

The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college.  A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time.  The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
