MUS2683 APPLIED INSTRUMENTAL LESSONS II

1 Credit Hour

 

Student Level:

This course is open to students on the college level in either the Freshman or Sophomore year.

 

Catalog Description:

MUS 2683 - Applied Instrumental Lessons II (1 Hr.)

The applied music curriculum is designed to foster maximum development of skill and insight in musical performance. Students have an opportunity to gain experience in performing before an audience by participating in recital programs and jury exams. Private instruction in applied music is available for brass, keyboard, percussion, and woodwinds.

 

Course Classification:

Independent Study

 

Prerequisites:

Applied Instrumental Lessons are open to any student, with instructor approval, who plays a keyboard, percussion, or wind instrument.

 

Controlling Purpose:

Music is an essential part of our social and cultural fabric. Performance-centered classes allow each student to improve their skills and talents as a musician and to develop their levels of expression.

 

Learner Outcomes:

Upon completion of the course, the student will:

  1. Continue to develop their technique on their chosen instrument
  2. Improve their ability to identify and utilize the basics of music rehearsal and performance
  3. Perform various pieces of music

 

Units Outcomes and Clock Hours of Instruction for Core Curriculum:

The following outline defines the minimum core content, not including the final examination period.  Instructors may add other material as time allows.

 

UNIT 1: FUNDAMENTALS OF INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC

Outcomes:  Further develop technique on a student’s chosen instrument

  • Identify and produce proper tone
  • Sight-read
  • Identify and use major and minor scales
  • Identify various rhythms
  • Define and use musical terms

 

UNIT 2: PRACTICE AND REHEARSAL TECHNIQUES

Outcomes:  Improve student’s understanding of the basics of music practice, rehearsal, and performance.

  • Follow and implement given instructions
  • Perform various expression and tempo markings
  • Describe and use various practice techniques
  • Recognize how to come lessons prepared
  • Evaluate their role in any given work at any given time
  • Summarize their role and relationship to the ensemble regarding balance and intonation.

 

UNIT 3:   PERFORMANCE

Outcomes:  Perform various pieces of music.

  • Implement what is learned in practice, rehearsal, and lessons
  • Accurately perform the demands of each piece of music (i.e., style, expression, rhythm, tempo, etc.)
  • Properly evaluate their performance for strengths and weaknesses
  • Evaluate their role in the college community as a musician and performer

Course Time Frame:

The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission, and the Kansas Board of Regents define a credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college.  A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time. The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
