MUS2621 MUSIC THEORY II

3 Credit Hours

This course is open to students on the college level in either the Freshman or Sophomore year.

Catalog Description:

MUS2621 - Music Theory II (3 hrs.)

This course includes a study of the principles of voice leading; three- and four-voice writing of triads in root position and first and second inversions. Harmonic progression, musical form, cadences, phrases, periods, and non-chord tones are studied in depth. Music Theory II is a requirement of all music majors and should be taken concurrently with MUS2626 Aural Skills II.

MUS2620 Music Theory I.

Controlling Purpose:

To continue the presentation of the basic ingredients of music presented in Music Theory I, so that structure, design, and language are made clear to the student.  The class will deal specifically with compositional and analysis skills.

Learner Outcomes:

For those students majoring in music, this class will provide the basic material necessary for success in Music Theory III, and IV, and ultimately, success in completing a music degree at any four-year institution.

The learning outcomes and competencies detailed in this course outline or syllabus meet or exceed the learning outcomes and competencies specified by the Kansas Core Outcomes Groups project for this course as approved by the Kansas Board of Regents.

Unit Outcomes for Criterion Based Evaluation:

The following outline defines the minimum core content not including the final examination period.  Instructors may add other material as time allows.

UNIT 1:  Diatonic Triads

Outcomes:  Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to successfully construct various chords and compose in four-part harmony.

  • Construct chords over a given figured bass line involving root position and first and second inversion chords using appropriate techniques of four-part writing.
  • Analyze a composition by identifying the harmonic patterns, structural relationships, form, and all non-chord tones.
  • Construct a 16 measure composition in four-part harmony correctly realizing a given figured bass and using appropriate doubling and notation.

Course Time Frame:

The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college.  A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time.  The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
