AGR1225 SWINE PRODUCTION COURSE PROCEDURE


AGR1225 SWINE PRODUCTION

3 Credit Hours

This course is open to all students

Catalog Description:

AGR1225 - Swine Production (3 hrs.)

This course approaches the education of students from a practical, real world approach to the swine industry. The students will be introduced to the concepts of nutrition, reproduction, EPD use, selection, health, handling, and management of the swine herd and individuals through all phases of the swine industry.

Controlling Purpose:

The purpose of course is give the agricultural student a good grasp of the swine industry and the importance of it to agriculture and the world’s economic and nutritional needs of the world’s population.

Learner Outcomes:

Upon completion of the course, the student will:

  1. Determine swine breeds, external body parts, and basic internal anatomy.
  2. Demonstrate basic evaluation techniques for all phases of production and an understanding of animal behavior.
  3. Interpret and explain reproduction techniques, EPD’s, and practices used in the swine industry.
  4. Demonstrate knowledge of nutritional concepts and the animal’s health in all phases of the industry.

Unit Outcomes for Criterion Based Evaluation:

The following outline defines the minimum core content not including the final examination period. Instructors may add other material as time allows.

UNIT 1: Breeds and Anatomy

Outcomes: The student will Determine swine breeds, external body parts, basic internal anatomy.

  • List and explain each of the swine breeds used in the swine industry.
  • Identify each external body parts.
  • Identify and explain internal body parts and their functions.

UNIT 2: Swine Evaluation

Outcomes: Student will demonstrate basic evaluation techniques for all phases of production and an understanding of animal behavior.

  • Determine grades for live swine animals for slaughter.
  • Demonstrate a knowledge of form to function.
  • Determine which female or boar will fit the requirements of operation needs when replacement is necessary.
  • Evaluate Market animals and calculate the following data; dressing %, ADG and etc.

UNIT 3: Swine Reproduction

Outcomes: The student will be able to interpret and explain reproduction techniques, EPD’s, and practices used in the swine industry.

  • Explain swine reproduction methods.
  • Demonstrate the use of AI techniques.
  • Calculate and demonstrate knowledge of EPD’s used in the swine Industry.

UNIT 4: Swine Nutrition

Outcomes: Students should demonstrate knowledge of nutritional concepts and needs of swine animals in all phases of the industry.

  • Identify Feed ingredients and their use.
  • Demonstrate the ability to calculate rations for each phase of the swine industry.
  • Identify and explain the nutrients.

Course Time Frame:

The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college.  A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time.  The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
