AGR1216 ANIMAL HEALTH COURSE PROCEDURE


AGR1216 ANIMAL HEALTH

3 Credit Hours

Student Level:

This course is open to students on the college level in either the Freshman or Sophomore year.

Catalog Description:

AGR1216 - Animal Health (3 hrs)

This course is designed to introduce student to maintenance and care of livestock through prevention, vaccination, and general up keep and care of livestock.

Controlling Purpose:

The purpose of this this course is to provide the student with the knowledge and skill necessary to provide maintenance and care of livestock through prevention, vaccination, and general up keep and care of livestock.

Learner Outcomes:

Upon completion of the course, the student will:

1. Identify the basics of animal health

2. Describe the basics of animal respiratory and digestive systems

3. Describe the basics of Urinary and Reproductive Systems

4. Illustrate proper maintenance and care of housing, facilities and equipment

Unit Outcomes for Criterion Based Evaluation:

The following outline defines the minimum core content not including the final examination period. Instructors may add other material as time allows.

UNIT 1: Basic Knowledge

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to successfully Identify the basics of animal health.

  • List the body’s natural defense mechanisms against diseases.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the causes, transmission, diagnosis, and therapy for common diseases of farm animals
  • Identify mechanisms for disease prevention: biosecurity application, vaccination
  • Identify and describe the five classes of drugs.
  • Demonstrate the proper care and administration of drugs.
  • Identify and describe the impact of diet and environment on animals’ health.
  • Identify special health risks in feedlot operations, appropriate precautions and implications for care and marketing.

UNIT 2: Anatomy: Respiratory and Digestive Systems

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to successfully describe the basics of animal respiratory and digestive systems

  • Identify the parts of the respiratory system.
  • Identify major disturbances of the respiratory system.
  • Identify the parts of the digestive systems.
  • Identify major disturbances of the digestive system.

UNIT 3: Anatomy: Urinary and Reproductive Systems

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to successfully describe the basics of Urinary and Reproductive Systems

  • Identify the parts of the urinary system.
  • Identify major disturbances of the urinary system.
  • Identify the parts of the reproductive system.
  • Identify major disturbances of the reproductive system.

UNIT 4: Basic External Care Procedures

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to successfully illustrate proper maintenance and care of housing, facilities and equipment

  • Describe management techniques that are important in production agriculture
  • Develop a resource use plan, which integrates the functions and activities of management in the organization and control of farm and ranch resources
  • Describe the proper care and maintenance of an animal’s micro environment
  • Describe the proper care and maintenance of an animal’s macro environment

Course Time Frame:

The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college.  A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time.  The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
