Course Descriptions


Cowley College has nearly 600 courses approved by the Kansas Board of Regents which coincide with the many pathways and programs of study that lead towards a degree, vocational certificate, or industry recognized credential or skill. Cowley advisors will help you design a program to meet your educational and career goals.

Refer to 2018-2019 Cowley College “Programs of Study ” to determine the course requirements and recommended elective courses for each degree or certificate for each specified pathway. Not all courses are offered each semester. Students should visit with their advisor for information on courses that are offered on a rotational basis.

Kansas Regents Shared Number (KRSN)

Courses that currently have a Kansas Regents Shared Number (Common Course Numbers designated by the Kansas System Wide Transfer Course Matrix) are indicated by their associated KRSN number. The learning outcomes and competencies in these courses meet or exceed the learning outcomes and competencies specified by the Kansas Core Outcomes Groups project for these courses as approved by the Kansas Board of Regents. 

The Kansas Board of Regents has approved and faculty representatives from Kansas public postsecondary institutions have agreed upon the learning outcomes for the systemwide transfer of specified courses.  A student who completes any of these courses at a Kansas public university, community college, or technical college will be able to transfer the course to any Kansas public institution offering an equivalent course.

    This is a course designed for the student who seeks a basic working knowledge of accounting. The basic accounting principles are learned and applied. The course covers a smaller amount of material at a somewhat slower pace in comparison to Principles of Accounting I and is recommended for the student with no previous accounting background.

  • ACC1120 - Payroll Accounting

    Payroll accounting will provide practice in all payroll operations both manually and through the use of computerized payroll software. The course will cover topics including the preparation of employee earnings records, payroll registers, and federal and state reports. A basic payroll accounting system will be used to introduce calculations and recording of earnings and taxes.

    This course looks at crops and forage plant and the science through history up to today. This course shows how crops fit into all of society and how crops and the by-products contribute to the wellbeing of humans and industries from a worldwide perspective. This course explores the agronomics of crops (including field, small grains, grasses and legumes) and the culture needs. The class also explores crop rotation, soil prep and fertilization, varieties, pests, harvesting and storage of the products, as well as, the environmental factors, soils and pests and associated management practices. Lab will be used to insure knowledge of these practices. This course consists of lecture (3cr) and lab (1cr).

  • AGR1267 - Principles of Animal Science

    This class is designed to coordinate with the AGR1268 Animal Science & Industry course and be the lecture portion of that course.  This course looks at what animal science was and what it is today.  The course investigates how animals fit into all of society and how animals contribute to the well-being of humans from a worldwide perspective. The course explores uses that humans have found for our domesticated animals in addition to food and clothing uses. It explores traditional livestock but also companion animals, aqua culture, rabbits, and careers associated with animal science. It also explores food safety, consumers’ concerns, and animal welfare rights. This is a lecture course.

The study will develop competencies in the basic elements forming medical words, categorizing major suffixes and group prefixes. Anatomical, physiological, and pathological terms will be reviewed so that students will better understand special medical procedures. This is the introductory course in medical terminology and is intended for all who desire knowledge in this subject.

  • ALH5202 - Certified Medication Aide

    Upon completion of this 75-hour course, the student will receive the opportunity to take an exam, under KDHE guidelines. Upon successfully passing the course and the state exam, the student will receive certification for Medication Aide. This course will contain 50 clock theory hours and 25 clock clinical hours. The course will cover the role and responsibilities of the Medication Aide, drugs used by the system, and administration of medications.
    Prerequisite(s): Student must hold a Kansas Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) certificate and meet or exceed minimum reading standards of eighth grade level. Students must be 18 years of age to enroll, per KDADS requirement. At the start of the course, each student will be required to have a background check completed.

    A course designed to provide the individual with the basic skills, human understanding, and attitude to upgrade the services rendered for adult care facilities in the state of Kansas. Upon successful completion of this 90-hour course and the state examination, the student will receive certification from the state of Kansas.
    Prerequisite(s): Student must meet, or exceed minimum reading assessment score or ACT reading score of 18 or higher; Associate degree or higher to waive the assessment test. At the start of the course, each student will be required to have a background check completed.

  • ALH5213 - Long Term Adult Health Care Administrator

    Elective Type: Elective
    The long-term care administrator in training program is a practicum-based curriculum of study that is individualized to the needs of each individual student. This competency and practicum based educational program in long term care is a program of instruction that meets the standards established by the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services (KDADS). Students must report to an actual long-term care facility for a minimum of 480 hours of training under the guidance of a preceptor who is a licensed long-term care administrator. Students must complete a number of duties during the practicum under the guidance of the preceptor. At the conclusion of the practicum, students will write a detailed summary paper of the experience. During the program, students must take a (3) credit hour courses. The required class is: ALH1676 - Health Care Finance . Successful students will have the opportunity to seek licensure as a long-term care administrator.
    Prerequisite(s): A bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university. At the start of the course, each student will be required to have a background check completed.

    This course prepares the licensed nurse to gain the knowledge and ability to demonstrate proper and safe activities concerning venipuncture’s, peripheral IV insertion, maintenance and care, as well as IV medication use and administration.
    Prerequisite(s): The student must have their current nursing license and current negative mantoux two- step (TB) skin test: one-step for the current annual student recipient and two-step for the first time, noncurrent student recipient. At the start of the course, each student will be required to have a background check completed.

    This course is designed to provide an overview of anatomy, physiology, and basic pathology for students who wish to know more about the human body and disease. It would be very useful for students who are currently functioning in healthcare or those who plan to enter the allied health workforce (e.g. medical transcription, medical coding, nursing assistant, etc.). It is not intended to replace the five credit hour anatomy and physiology course for those who intend to enter professional training in the health sciences (e.g. nursing, medicine, etc.).

    This field-based course is designed to provide the necessary clinical experiences to prepare the student for certification as a phlebotomist. As a member of the health care delivery team, the phlebotomist generally works in a clinical laboratory under the supervision of the appropriate technologist. The phlebotomist is primarily responsible for collecting blood specimens from patients for the purpose of laboratory analysis. The course will emphasize safety, specimen collection (venipuncture and capillary puncture) and specimen processing. Students will demonstrate the basic skills required to collect a blood specimen. The student will demonstrate knowledge of venipuncture, collection equipment, specimen collection, and the ability to collect blood specimens by venipuncture and skin puncture. The clinical rotation consists of 120 documented hours with minimum performance of 100 combined venipuncture and skin punctures and orientation in a full service laboratory.

    This course will enable the student to gain basic understanding and hands on experience utilizing industry standard procedures in the diagnosis and repair of Electrical/Electronic Systems. Topics presented throughout the course cover complex vehicle multiplexing systems, battery, starting, charging, and lighting systems, as well as driver information systems.
    Prerequisite(s): AMS3117 - Electrical I  or equivalent, or instructor approval.

    This class is designed to provide an advanced understanding of the dynamics involved in hybrid and alternative fuel vehicles as well as requiring basic competencies in the skills and knowledge necessary to diagnose and repair alternative fuel technology vehicles.
    Prerequisite(s): AMS3117 - Electrical I  and AMS3118 - Electrical II , or passed the equivalent ASE Certification exam in Electrical and Electronic Systems.
