Course Descriptions

Cowley College has nearly 600 courses approved by the Kansas Board of Regents which coincide with the many pathways and programs of study that lead towards a degree, vocational certificate, or industry recognized credential or skill. Cowley advisors will help you design a program to meet your educational and career goals.

Refer to the Cowley College “Programs of Study ” to determine the course requirements and recommended elective courses for each degree or certificate for each specified pathway. Not all courses are offered each semester. Students should visit with their advisor for information on courses that are offered on a rotational basis. Some courses list a scheduling note in the description.

Kansas Regents Shared Number (KRSN)

Courses that currently have a Kansas Regents Shared Number (Common Course Numbers designated by the Kansas System Wide Transfer Course Matrix) are indicated by their associated KRSN number. The learning outcomes and competencies in these courses meet or exceed the learning outcomes and competencies specified by the Kansas Core Outcomes Groups project for these courses as approved by the Kansas Board of Regents. 

The Kansas Board of Regents has approved and faculty representatives from Kansas public postsecondary institutions have agreed upon the learning outcomes for the systemwide transfer of specified courses.  A student who completes any of these courses at a Kansas public university, community college, or technical college will be able to transfer the course to any Kansas public institution offering an equivalent course.

  • AcceleRATE - Identifies a course that a special tuition rate applies to Kansas high school students (Fall 2020 Kansas rate is $60/credit hour and may be subject to change through action of the Cowley Board of Trustees). Oklahoma High School students can qualify for a special Oklahoma AcceleRATE of $80.00 per credit hour. (Subject to change through action of the Cowley Board of Trustees.)

  • MCM2413 - Violence in the Media - Journalism

    This multidisciplinary course is designed for students who wish to develop academic and practical abilities to effectively function in a trauma or disaster. This course is designed primarily for those deciding whether or not to enter the field of journalism (broadcast, Web or print) where they may come in contact with a traumatic situation. Students from other disciplines (Allied Health, communications, and theater) will enroll in a similar class that addresses their roles. A capstone simulated disaster for all students (journalism, communications, theater and EMS) will be conducted followed by a debriefing session.

  • MCM2726 - Introduction to Broadcasting

    The goal of this course is to help students understand the history and the advancements in the field of broadcasting, and to also help students understand what the field of broadcasting has to offer them (education, jobs, etc.). Through the application of the text and practical, hands-on approaches, students will not only learn about different methods and techniques in broadcasting, but will have the opportunity to produce their own projects.

    Simplifying algebraic expressions. Solving equations and word problems involving linear and quadratic polynomials, rational expressions, rational exponents, and radicals. Graphing linear and quadratic functions. This course requires that the students furnish their own TI‐83 or TI‐83 PLUS graphing calculator. This course does not fulfill AS or AA math degree.

    An alternative course to the traditional College Algebra class which covers the same College Algebra material over a five credit hour span per week instead of three. The extra class time will be spent in review of Intermediate Algebra skills necessary to be successful in College Algebra. This course will transfer as the equivalent of MTH4420 - College Algebra . This course requires that the student furnish their TI-83 or TI-83 PLUS graphing calculator.

Music

Proficiency Examinations

Those students interested in pursuing a degree in music from a four-year institution must declare a chief performing medium and demonstrate their performance ability with that instrument or voice.

After their initial registration, students have their proficiency judged by their major instructor.

Thereafter, they may perform for a faculty jury each semester to determine their proficiency level and progress

Applied Music

Instruction is given in applied media to develop musicianship, performance skills, and reading knowledge of music literature. The individual applied areas set specific requirements for each level.

For one semester of credit music majors studying applied instrument or voice must enroll in Applied Music Seminar, which will meet for one hour once a week. This will allow the student to perform and demonstrate the skills and techniques that they are working on in their individual lessons.

Applied lessons are available for all instrumental and voice classifications.
