Theatre Transfer Pathway (AFA)

The Associate of Fine Arts (AFA) degree is designed to prepare students for transfer into a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree program at a 4-year college or university.  Students have the opportunity to work with their advisor to select courses in their particular area of interest in Theatre which include Arts Management, Technology and Design, Performance or Musical Theatre.

Kansas General Education Core Requirements (35 hours)


Successfully completing 35 hours of approved coursework in the following designated categories will fulfill the requirements of meeting the Kansas System-wide General Education Core.

Basic Skills - English, Communications and Math (12 hours)


Natural and Physical Laboratory Sciences (5 hours)


Complete a 5 credit Lab Science Elective Course.

Social & Behavioral Sciences (6 hours)


Complete 6 credits from two different disciplines from approved Social Science Elective(s) . One elective should be General Psychology (PSY6711).

Arts & Humanities (6 hours)


Complete 6 credits from two different disciplines from approved Humanities Elective(s)  Courses. THE, LIT, ART or MUS are suggested.  One elective should be Theatre Appreciation (THE2730). 

NOTE: Music Appreciation (MUS2611) or Dramatic Literature (LIT2565) can fulfill Humanities elective if not used as a Theatre emphasis elective. 

Additional Institution Core Requirements (6 hours)


To satisfy degree requirements to meet the Kansas system-wide general education core, complete 6 credits of additional approved electives applicable to the transfer pathway.  

Fine Arts Pathway Electives (27 hours)


The Associate of Fine Arts degree requires a minimum of 27 credit hours of pathway electives. Students should work with their advisor and transfer institution to determine the most appropriate courses within the pathway required and elective blocks.  Coursework may vary based upon the student’s area of interest in Theatre Arts Management, Theatre Performance, Theatre Technology and Design, and Musical Theatre. 

Pathway Requirements (12 hours)


Students should complete the following courses for this pathway in order to transfer into a corresponding Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) program. The following courses are required for all students regardless of area of emphasis in Theatre.

Pathway Emphasis Electives (minimum of 18 hours)


An additional 18 hours of coursework must be completed for the Associate of Fine Arts (AFA) degree.  Students should work with their advisor to select courses that best fulfill the requirements for their particular area of emphasis in the Theatre discipline.

Minimum Hours for a Degree 62*


*A minimum of 62 hours is required to earn a Cowley degree; however additional credit hours may be outlined on the transfer pathway to meet the program requirements for a transfer institution. 

Depending on skill level and assessment scores, students may be required to take the necessary basic skill or prerequisite courses prior to enrolling in the program courses.
