(AGS) Associate of General Studies Degree Pathway


The Associate of General Studies (AGS) degree is designed to provide students with the opportunity develop knowledge, skills, and greater philosophical appreciation for lifelong learning. Although many of the courses a student may complete may be considered general education transfer courses, the degree itself is not intended to be a full transfer degree into a four-year university program.

General Education Requirements (26 hours)*


Basic Skills - English, Communications and Math (9 hours)*


Complete the following courses to meet the basic skills requirement for the AGS degree

  • ENG 2211 - English Composition I (3 hours)
  • Communications/English (3 hours) (ENG2212, COM2711 or COM2725)
  • Math Course (3 hours) Intermediate Algebra (or higher Math)

*NOTE: If a student wishes to complete the Kansas General Education Core requirements then they must complete Composition I and Composition II, a Communications course, AND a College-level Math course

Natural & Physical Laboratory Sciences (5 hours)


Complete a 5 credit Natural or Physical Science course from approved Lab Science Elective(s) .

Social and Behavioral Sciences (6 hours)


Complete courses from 2 Different Departments Social Science Elective(s)  . (ANT, ECO, GEG, MIN, POL, PSY, SOC). 

Arts & Humanities (6 hours)


Complete courses from 2 Different Departments from approved Humanities Elective(s)  (ART, COM, ENG, FOL, HIS, LIT, MUS, PHO, REL, THE) - Studio and Performance courses cannot be included. 

Kansas System Wide General Ed. Core Requirement Option (6 hours)**


Students who wish to complete the Kansas System Wide General Education Core requirement should complete 6 additional general education electives from approved transfer courses in Math, Science, Social Science or Humanities areas.  Meeting this requirement will reduce the amount of additional degree electives to be completed from a minimum of 36 credits to 30 credits.

Degree Electives (36 Credits**)


Complete at least 36 credits of college-level coursework to fulfill this requirement. Students should select courses that coincide with their interest area or select courses that provide them a wide-range of exposure to different disciplines.  For example, students who wish to focus on Leadership or Business areas, can select courses designated by the LED or BUS department code.  Students who hold a technical certificate can expand beyond the technical skills and complete additional general education credits to earn an Associate’s of General Studies degree. 

**NOTE: Students who wish to utilize General Education Credit to complete the Kansas System Wide General Education Core would utilize 6 general education credits towards meeting that requirement. Composition II must also be completed as one of the additional courses.
