CGA2025 PAGE LAYOUT SOFTWARE

3 Credit Hours

Student Level:

This course is open to students on the college level in either the freshman or the sophomore year.

Catalog Description:

CGA2025 - Page Layout Software (3 hrs.)

Page Layout Software is a key component of a desktop publishing system. This course will deal in the arrangement and style of page content along with proper file preparation. Students will combine text and graphics to create layouts for a variety of publications. (Adobe InDesign Required.)

CGA2013 Introduction to Computer Graphics

Controlling Purpose:

This course is designed to build on your fundamental InDesign skills learned in Introduction to Computer Graphics. Emphasis is on frames, importing and editing text, typography, color, styles, importing and linking graphics, creating tables, transparencies, long documents, output, and XML.

Learner Outcomes:

The student will:

  1. Have the ability to locate and efficiently use all tools in InDesign
  2. Understand and use the tools in an appropriate manner and for the best results in production
  3. Import and edit text in InDesign
  4. Be able to work with Typography and special characters
  5. Understand color management and the important steps of incorporating color management into page layout
  6. Be able to appropriately create and apply all forms of styles in InDesign
  7. Import and link graphics in InDesign
  8. Create tables in InDesign
  9. Be able to work with transparencies in InDesign
  10. Have the ability to create and manage all lengths of documents including long documents such as books
  11. Be able to prepare an InDesign file for production
  12. Be able to work with XML in InDesign

Unit Outcomes for Criterion Based Evaluation:

The following defines the minimum core content not including the final examination period. Instructors may add other content as time allows.

UNIT 1: Introduction and Overview

Outcomes: Upon completion of the unit, the students will have the ability to locate and efficiently use all tools in InDesign and import and edit text.

  • Work with tools, documents windows, the pasteboard, and panels.
  • Create, edit, and apply multiple master pages.
  • Modify frames.
  • Work with groups.
  • Import and edit text.
  • Create and insert special characters.
  • Change type spacing and appearance.

UNIT 2: Color/Styles/Graphics

Outcomes: Upon completion of the unit, the students will understand color management and the important steps of incorporating color management into page layout.

  • Add colors to the Swatches panel.
  • Create, apply, and adjust gradients.
  • Create a tint.
  • Create a spot color.
  • Work with color management engines and ICC profiles.
  • Create and apply object, character, paragraph and table styles.
  • Globally update object, character and paragraph styles.
  • Create styles groups.
  • Import and link graphics.
  • Import clipping paths with graphics, and create clipping paths.
  • Manage placed files using the Links panel.
  • Use and create libraries for objects.

UNIT 3: Tables/Transparencies

Outcomes: Upon completion of the unit, the students will be able to work with transparencies in InDesign and format tables.

  • Import formatted tables from other applications.
  • Create and format tables.
  • Colorize an imported black-and-white graphic.
  • Change the opacity of objects drawn in InDesign.
  • Apply and adjust transparency settings for imported graphics and text.
  • Apply blending modes to overlapping objects.
  • Apply and edit multiple effects to an object.

UNIT 4: Long Documents

Outcomes: Upon completion of the unit, the students will have the ability to create and manage all lengths of documents including long documents such as books.

  • Join multiple InDesign documents into a book.
  • Control page numbering across separate documents.
  • Create a table of contents for a book.
  • Assign a source document for defining styles.
  • Update book files after modifying documents.
  • Create index references.
  • Generate an index file and sort entries.
  • Edit index references.

UNIT 5: Output and PDF Exporting

Outcomes: Upon completion of the unit, the students will be able to prepare an InDesign file for production.

  • Confirm that an InDesign file and all of its elements are ready for printing
  • Generate an Adobe PDF file for proofing.
  • Assemble all necessary files for printing or delivery to a service provider or printer.
  • Print documents containing spot colors.
  • Select appropriate print settings for fonts and graphics.
  • Create a Print preset to automate the printing process.

UNIT 6: XML

Outcomes: Upon completion of the unit, the students will be able to work with XML in InDesign and import or export XML.

  • Import and apply XML tags.
  • Map styles and tags.
  • Use the Structure pane.
  • Import and export XML.

Course Timeframe:

The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission, and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching, and assessing the educational aspects of the college. A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time. The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
