CRJ5483 CRIMINAL JUSTICE TOPICS II

3 Credit Hours

Student Level:

This course is open to students on the college level in their freshman or sophomore year.

Catalog Description:

CRJ5483 - Criminal Justice Topics II (3hrs)

This course will continue to combine classroom sessions and patrol duties to address the application of communicative and technical skills in the decision making process and how these abilities are used to respond to call-for-service within the community.

Course Classification:

Prerequisite:

Student must have completed CRJ5482 Criminal Justice Topics I.

Controlling Purpose:

This course is designed to help students increase the knowledge and skills, through additional scheduled training topics and required police-community services that are expected of entry-level criminal justice job applicants.

Learner Outcomes:

Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills in responding to calls-for-service, through effective communicative and technical decision making, based on legal and ethical considerations.

Unit Outcomes for Criterion Based Evaluation:

The following defines the minimum core content not including the final examination period. Instructors may add other content as time allows.

UNIT 1: Field Control Tactics

Outcome:  The student will be proficient in applying control tactics.

  • Use verbal commands to place suspects into selected field search positions.
  • Conduct body searches of suspects safely and thoroughly.
  • Apply handcuffs onto suspects in a quick and safe manner.
  • Perform handcuffing on multi-suspects using single and multi-cuffs
  • Discuss the proper placement of single and multi-suspects for transportation.

UNIT 2:  Survival Tactics

Outcome:  The student will be knowledgeable of field survival tactics.

  • Discuss officer survival tips based upon real-life situations.
  • Recognize the danger signs of multi-assailant confrontations.
  • Recognize the dual role of body vests and survival.
  • Perform survival tactics when faced with edged weapon assaults.
  • Retention of personal weapons during suspect assaults.
  • Use of cover during firearm assaults when responding to calls-for-service.
  • Recognize gang signs while responding to calls-for-service

UNIT 3: Chase Vehicle Pursuits

Outcome: The student will appreciate the complexity of police vehicle pursuits.

  • Compare and contrast tactical patrol strategies in vehicle pursuit situations.
  • Explain the legal and liability issues in conducting vehicle pursuits.
  • Compare and contrast departmental policies reference police vehicle pursuits.
  • Relate to the dangers involved to citizens and officers in high-speed chases.

UNIT 4: Weapons Training

Outcome:  The student will be proficient in the use of the .9mm semi-automatic handgun.

  • Pass the firearms safety examination with a score of 90% or above.
  • Follow proper procedures in the safe handling of a semi-automatic weapon.
  • Pass the Lazer and HITS firearms training courses with a score of 85% plus.
  • Perform all firing range procedures correctly during dry-firing practice.
  • Fire a qualification score of 70% at the range on a standard course of fire.
  • Engage targets using night firing tactics within a 70% overall score.

Course Timeframe:

The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college. A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time. The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
