AMP3361 ENGINE INSPECTION & INSTRUMENT SYSTEMS

3 Credit Hours

Student Level:

This course is open to students on the college level in either the Freshman or Sophomore year.

Catalog Description:

AMP3361 - Engine Inspection & Instrument Systems (3 hrs.)

In this course, students will learn to perform powerplant conformity and airworthiness inspections, inspect an engine and accessories and determine whether all airworthiness directives are in compliance with FAA and manufacturer’s specifications. Students will also inspect, repair, and replace engine instruments and their associated plumbing or wiring.

Prerequisites:

Entry is contingent on completion of the FAA General Curriculum: AMG 3350, 3351, 3352, 3353, 3354, & 3355.

Controlling Purpose:

As part of the Aviation Mechanic - Powerplant program as outlined by the FAA Part 147 document, a minimum of 750 hours of Powerplant Curriculum training is required.  This structure of this course is designed to provide a minimum of 64 hours of Engine Inspection and Engine Instrument Systems curriculum as outlined in Appendix D to Part 147 - General Curriculum Subjects.

Learner Outcomes:

Upon completion of the course, the student will:

·Perform powerplant conformity and airworthiness inspections.

·Troubleshoot, service and repair electrical and mechanical fluid rate‐of‐flow indicating systems.

·Inspect, check, service, troubleshoot and repair electrical and mechanical engine temperature, pressure and RPM indicating systems.

Unit Outcomes for Criterion Based Evaluation:

The following outline defines the minimum core content not including the final examination period.  Instructors may add other material as time allows.

UNIT 1: Conformity and Airworthiness Inspections

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to successfully perform powerplant conformity and airworthiness inspections.

  • Inspect engine for conformity
  • Inspect engine accessories for conformity.
  • Review engine records for appropriate entries.
  • Properly complete and FAA Form 337
  • Properly complete a Malfunction or Defect Report.
  • Research engine and accessory records for compliance with airworthiness directives.
  • Perform a 100 hour inspection on an aircraft engine.

UNIT 2: Fluid Rate‐of‐Flow Indicating Systems

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to successfully demonstrate knowledge of troubleshooting, servicing, and repairing electrical and mechanical fluid rate‐of‐flow indicating systems.

  • Describe how to troubleshoot fluid rate‐of‐flow indicating systems
  • Bleed a pressure indicating system.
  • Inspect and check the flow of a fuel injector systems.

UNIT 3: Temperature, Pressure and RPM Indicating Systems

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to Inspect, check, service, troubleshoot and repair electrical and mechanical engine temperature, pressure and RPM indicating systems.

  • Inspect, check, and troubleshoot the operation of a tachometer system which utilizes a tachometer generator. Service and repair as necessary.
  • Inspect, check, service, troubleshoot and repair engine instruments for proper operation and markings.
  • Field service of temperature indicating instruments.
  • Field service of pressure indicating instruments.
  • Field service of R.P.M. indicating instruments.
  • Field service of flow metering instruments.

Task Number: PTC8, Teaching Level: 3, Task: Perform powerplant conformity and airworthiness inspections.

Task Number: PSA9, Teaching Level: 2, Task: Troubleshoot, service and repair electrical and mechanical fluid rate of flow indicating systems.

Task Number: PSA10, Teaching Level: 3, Inspect, check, service, troubleshoot and repair electrical and mechanical engine temperature, pressure and RPM indicating systems.

Course Time Frame:

The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college.  A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time.  The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
