AGR1253 - Animal Diseases and Prevention (3 hrs.)
This course teaches students current concepts and management principles related to diseases and the prevention practice in the livestock industry. The production areas discussed will include from the 4-H project to large commercial production. The students will be introduced to common diseases and practices used in the industry.

Controlling Purpose:
The purpose of course is give the agricultural student an understanding of animal diseases and prevention.
Learner Outcomes:
Upon completion of the course, the student will:
- Identify basic disease categories found in animals.
- Recognize and explain diseases that affect animals.
- Demonstrate basic knowledge of disease prevention steps.
- Demonstrate basic knowledge of animal health.
Unit Outcomes for Criterion Based Evaluation:
The following outline defines the minimum core content not including the final examination period. Instructors may add other material as time allows.
UNIT 1: Introduction to Diseases
Outcomes: Students will identify basic disease categories found in animals.
- Identify and explain protozoa’s.
- Recognize and explain bacteria.
- Identify and explain viruses.
- List and name non-infectious diseases.
UNIT 2: Diagnosis and Treatment
Outcomes: Students will recognize and explain diseases that affect animals.
- Identify and explain the effects of various diseases.
- Recognize behavioral signs in animals that may be affected.
- List and explain possible treatments.
- Describe possible infection methods.
UNIT 3: Medication
Outcomes: Students will demonstrate basic knowledge of animal health and medications.
- Illustrate knowledge of delivery systems for medications.
- Demonstrate knowledge of vaccines and their usage.
- List different medicine categories.
- Demonstrate knowledge of medication usage.
- Explain medicine withdraw time.
UNIT 4: Disease Prevention
Outcomes: Students will demonstrate basic knowledge of disease prevention steps.
- Explain animal nutrition and its use in prevention and cure.
- Explain the use of sanitation in prevention.
- Identify illnesses by recognizing animal behavior signs.
- Identify and explain the functions of each type of equipment used in animal health and care.

Course Time Frame:
The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college. A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time. The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
