ENG2265 FOCUSED SEMINAR: WRITING

1 Credit Hour

Student Level:

This course is open to students in the Sophomore year of college.

Catalog Description:

ENG 2265 - Focused Seminar: Writing (1 hr.)

Focused Seminar is designed to encourage in-depth study of a particular genre of writing.  Emphasis is focused on research, presentation, and writing within a specific genre. Genres vary according to student interest and instructor approval. This course should be taken the final semester of study and is required of all Creative Writing majors.

Prerequisites:

Completion of at least two creative writing courses at Cowley College with a grade of B or above (or instructor approval). Students must interview with the instructor prior to enrollment to determine eligibility and approval of genre for the seminar.

Controlling Purpose:

This course is designed to help the student increase knowledge concerning a particular genre and writing skills pertaining to knowledge of that genre.  In addition, editing skills will be honed as the focus shifts to critiquing of works and providing critical feedback for other writers in the seminar.

Learner Outcomes:

Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to generate creative works in the genre of choice, assess the works, as well as those of other writers, and revise after taking a critical eye to previous drafts.

Unit Outcomes for Criterion Based Evaluation:

The following defines the minimum core content not including the final examination period. Instructors may add other content as time allows.

Unit 1:  Research and Study of Seminar Genre

Outcomes: Student will be able to explain the genre chosen for this seminar

  • Define the genre chosen for this study.
  • Identify key concepts of the genre.
  • Organize goals for the course relating to the genre.

Unit 2:  Plan of Action to Meet Goals

Outcomes: Student will develop a plan to meet established goals

  • Develop established goals into a plan of action that includes semester timeline.
  • Maintain a log throughout semester to indicate goals met and goals pending.

Unit 3: Creative Process

Outcomes: Student will focus on particular and personal aspects of the process.

  • Generate a wealth of genre-specific works through prewriting and brainstorming methods.
  • Select the methods that work best for development of creative material.
  • Assess if one or more methods should be utilized in creative process.
  • Organize ideas from concept to complete draft.

Unit 4:  Edit Collaboration & Revision

Outcomes: Student will focus on personal works and works of other writers in seminar.

  • Focus on the major concepts of professional works in chosen genre and revise own works in accordance with these concepts.
  • Edit works in other genres to hone basic skills.
  • Understand concepts of other genres in seminar to provide critical feedback.
  • Produce text free of grammatical errors, incorrect spelling and inconsistencies in person, subject, voice, tense and mood.

Unit 5:  Showcase Seminar Work

Outcomes: Student will present genre work at the end of semester.

  • Select appropriate expression of semester’s focus.
  • Polish semester’s project in a way to showcase it in a public scenario.
  • Showcase writing in a professional manner within a creative community.
  • Coordinate with writers in the seminar to produce a group project or showcase for semester’s creative expressions.

Projects Required:

Compilation of semester’s works into an appropriate showcase as determined by instructor.

Textbook:

Instructor will coordinate book needs for chosen genre focus.

Materials/Equipment Required:

Instructor will coordinate material needs.

Attendance Policy:

Students should adhere to the attendance policy outlined by the instructor in the course syllabus.

Grading Policy:

The grading policy will be outlined by the instructor in the course syllabus.

Course Time Frame:

The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college. A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time. The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
