LIT2567  ETHNICITY &  IDENTITY: NATIVE AMERICAN LITERATURE

This course is open to students on the college level freshman or sophomore.

Catalog Description:

LIT2567 - Ethnicity and Identity: Native American Literature (H) (3 hrs.)

This course is a survey of literature by Native American authors who have influenced their own and outside communities with their compelling ideas and works. Emphasis is placed on understanding influence through various genres and eras of Native American literature.

Prerequisites:

ENG2211 Composition I or instructor approval.

Controlling Purpose:

This course is designed to develop the student’s awareness of and appreciation for classic and contemporary Native American contributions to literature.

Learner Outcomes:

Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to distinguish works in various genres and eras, identify authors and their works, utilize literary terminology in the discussion of various genres, and demonstrate an understanding of themes in Native American literature.

Unit Outcomes for Criterion Based Evaluation:

The following outline defines the minimum core content not including the final examination period.  Instructors may add other material as time allows.

Unit 1: The Native American Experience

Outcomes: Students will develop an understanding of the Native American experience through literature.

  • Identify literary terms and show how their use helps create meaning in a work.
  • Explain how economic, social, cultural, and/or religious factors influenced Native American writing.
  • Explain the connection between literary works and their historical context.
  • Recognize technical and theoretical contributions of the writers studied.

Unit 2: Development of the Native American Identity

Outcomes: Students will develop an understanding of the shaping of the Native American identity as it is expressed and/or developed through literature.

  • Identify literary terms and show how their use helps create meaning in a work.
  • Explain the role of the individual and the community in tribal cultures.
  • Analyze central issues dealing with identity commonly found in Native American works.
  • Distinguish the connections between experience, place, tradition, language and an individual or tribe’s identity.
  • Recognize technical and theoretical contributions of the writers studied.

Course Time Frame:

The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college. A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time. The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
