ART2142 ART HISTORY RENAISSANCE TO CONTEMPORARY

3 Credit Hours

Student Level:

This course is open to students on the college level in either the Freshman or Sophomore year and to area high school vocational students.

Catalog Description:

ART2142 - Art History Renaissance to Contemporary (3 hrs.)

An in-depth study of the outline and historical significance of world art from the Renaissance to the 21st century in chronological order.

Controlling Purpose:

Art History II is designed for those with previous experience, but with a desire to develop a personal appreciation of art from the Renaissance into the 21st Century.

Learner Outcomes:

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to recognize the differences between the various directions Art History has taken.  The students will discover for themselves just exactly why Art History has responded to events of the time, to appreciate and to consciously attempt to understand the reasons for, and the efforts required of a particular time in history.

The learning outcomes and competencies detailed in this course meet, or exceed the learning outcomes and competencies specified by the Kansas Core Outcomes Project for this course, as sanctioned by the Kansas Board of Regents.

Unit Outcomes for Criterion Based Evaluation:

The following outline defines the minimum core content not including the final examination period.  Instructors may add other material as time allows.

UNIT 1: Review Introduction

Outcomes: Student will be able to speak the language of an artist.

  • Identify the values of why we study art.
  • Be able to understand the language of the visual artist.
  • Oral participation in class reflects clear recognition of stylistic terminology.

UNIT 2: Renaissance

Outcomes: Student will be able to identify style of art.

  • Compare the different life styles.
  • Evaluate how art and religion helped move the time period.
  • Describe the artists in style.

UNIT 3: Nineteenth Century

Outcomes: Student will be able to explain history of art.

  • Analyze and explain the change in styles of modern art.
  • Evaluate the growth in the history timeline.

UNIT 4: Twentieth Century

Outcomes: Student will be able to identify styles of all groups.

  • Summarize the difference between groups.
  • Evaluate and understand life styles.
  • Evaluate the influence of artwork with the present day life styles.

Course Time Frame:

The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college.  A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time.  The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
