CWB1837 WEB DESIGN (DREAMWEAVER)

3 Credit Hours

Student Level:

This course is open to students on the college level in either the freshman or sophomore year.

Catalog Description:

CWB1837 - Web Design (Dreamweaver) (3 hr.)

This course is designed to introduce the fundamentals of Web page authoring using Adobe Dreamweaver. Emphasis is on developing an understanding of how to plan, design, create, modify, and publish a Web site. Students will create their own Web site throughout the course of the semester.

Prerequisites:

Grade of C or better in Design Software (CGA2013) and Foundation Design 2D (ART2130) or instructor approval

Controlling Purpose:

This course is designed to introduce the fundamentals of Web page authoring using Adobe Dreamweaver. Emphasis is on developing an understanding of how to plan, design, create, modify, and publish a Web site. Students will create their own Web site throughout the course of the semester.

Learner Outcomes:

Upon completion of the course, the student will:

  • Design a functional website using Adobe Dreamweaver
  • Appropriately utilize text, images, links, and positioning objects with cascading style sheets
  • Utilize HTML elements to structure a web page
  • Manage a web server and files

Unit Outcomes for Criterion Based Evaluation:

The following outline defines the minimum core content not including the final examination period.  Instructors may add other material as time allows.

UNIT 1: The Dreamweaver Interface

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to navigate Dreamweaver

  • Utilize the workspace
  • Manipulate panels and groups
  • Find and utilize coding and CSS tools

UNIT 2: HTML Coding

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to create site structure using HTML

  • Learn basic HTML syntax and structure
  • Create a basic page using hand-written HTML code
  • Create HTML code using Dreamweaver’s built-in coding functionality

UNIT 3: CSS Styling

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to utilize cascading stylesheets to style a web page

  • Learn basic CSS declarations and syntax
  • Create CSS declarations by hand-coding
  • Create CSS declarations by using Dreamweaver’s CSS panels
  • Style an HTML element using CSS

UNIT 4: Working with Images

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to create and modify raster images for a website

  • Prototype and design a website using an image created in Photoshop
  • Insert and edit images into a web page
  • Float images into position
  • Create a structured layout using images as needed

UNIT 5: Building a Website

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to demonstrate the ability to create a simple web site.

  • Translate client requirements
  • Create thumbnails and wireframe sketches of a website
  • Put a style sheet into production
  • Create a site template
  • Create a website based on requested specifications
  • Publish and update a Dreamweaver site

Projects Required:

The final for this course will include the creation of a website from scratch using a Dreamweaver starter template.

Textbook:

Contact Bookstore for current textbook.

Materials/Equipment Required:

  • Access to Adobe Dreamweaver software (face to face sections of the class will use software already installed in the graphic design computer lab)
  • A method to save and back-up work such as a flash drive, external hard drive, or access to an online cloud storage service
  • A sketchbook and drawing implements, including pencils, black pens, markers, colored pencils, etc.

Course Time Frame:

The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college.  A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time.  The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
