ALH6323 - First Aid & CPR (3 hrs)

Cause, prevention, and first aid care of life-threatening respiratory and cardiac emergencies and non-life-threatening emergencies for infant, children, and adults as outlined by the American Red Cross. An additional charge will be assessed to the student for an American Red Cross Card.

Controlling Purpose:
This course is designed to show the student how to deal with respiratory emergencies that could lead to cardiac arrest, how to give first aid for cardiac emergencies, also to obtain knowledge for prevention and first aid treatment of common emergencies as outlined by The American Red Cross.
Learner Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to perform life-saving and non-life-saving techniques on adults, children, and infants.

UNIT I: Personal Skills and Time Management
Outcomes: The student will gain an understanding of personal skills and time management.
- Set priorities in which several tasks will be accomplished.
- Attend class regularly and arrive on time for class.
UNIT II: Speaking Class
Outcomes: The student will gain an ability to more effectively interact with others.
- Speak effectively to give instructions for life saving and non-life saving techniques.
- Stay abreast of the new techniques available.
UNIT III: Basic First Aid
Outcomes: The student will develop abilities to help others who require basic emergency treatment.
- Perform lifesaving and non lifesaving techniques in case the need arises.
UNIT IV: Listening Skills
Outcomes: The student will develop better listening skills.
- Demonstrate appropriate listening skills to be able to obtain knowledge through video, instructor, and students.
UNIT V: Group Effectiveness Skills
Outcomes: The student will develop enhanced abilities to interact with others.
- Work in groups of two or more in performing skills.
UNIT VI: Community CPR and First Aid
Outcomes: The student will develop abilities to help others who require basic emergency treatment.
- Perform life threatening and non-life threatening techniques on infants, children and adults.

Course Time Frame:
The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college. A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time. The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
