Course Descriptions

Cowley College has nearly 600 courses approved by the Kansas Board of Regents which coincide with the many pathways and programs of study that lead towards a degree, vocational certificate, or industry recognized credential or skill. Cowley advisors will help you design a program to meet your educational and career goals.

Refer to the Cowley College “Programs of Study ” to determine the course requirements and recommended elective courses for each degree or certificate for each specified pathway. Not all courses are offered each semester. Students should visit with their advisor for information on courses that are offered on a rotational basis.  Kansas Regents System Wide Transfer Shared Number (KRSN)

Courses that currently have a Kansas Regents Shared Number (Common Course Numbers designated by the Kansas System Wide Transfer Course Matrix) are indicated by their associated KRSN number. The learning outcomes and competencies in these courses meet or exceed the learning outcomes and competencies specified by the Kansas Core Outcomes Groups project for these courses as approved by the Kansas Board of Regents. 

The Kansas Regents Transfer KS portal provides information on Systemwide Transfer (SWT) courses for Kansas public colleges and universities. Systemwide Transfer courses transfer to any Kansas public institution offering an equivalent course. The decision of lower division courses to count toward upper division credit hours is at the discretion of the receiving institution.

  • KS Excel in CTE Initiative - Identifies a course that qualifies for the State of Kansas Excel in CTE Initiative that provides free tuition to qualifying High School students in qualifying technical programs and courses.

    NOTE: Courses not listed as KS Excel in CTE Initiative allow High School students in Kansas and Oklahoma to qualify for the AcceleRATE which is a discounted flat-rate tuition amount for dual enrolled high school students. Some of the courses in technical programs fall under the AcceleRATE pricing and do not qualify for the Excel in CTE.

    Description: The goal of this course is to create an interest in and appreciation of the exciting world of theatre. No theatre background is necessary and the students are not required to perform. Units of study include theatre history, acting as a profession, the Greek, Roman and Shakespeare influences, as well as the technical and backstage aspect of theatre. Attendance and evaluation of a live theatre performance is a requirement for successfully completing the class. Emphasis is placed on appreciation of theatre as a collaborative art and will fulfill three hours of humanities credit towards graduation.

    Description: This course introduces the student to the fundamentals of vocal use for the stage and screen.  Students will develop techniques to expand breath support, vocal range and dynamics; learn precise articulation and speech practices; discover vocal anatomy; and introduce implementation of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA).  Through this course students will develop their own progression of vocal exercises for practical application.

    Description: Students will develop portfolio materials appropriate for transfer, internship, and employment opportunities in theatre arts. Students will focus on their specific area of specialization (performance, design, arts management). Students will meet two hours each week for lecture, classroom activities, and peer critique.     Description: This course explores the application of many technical theatre skills in professional settings outside of a traditional theatre. The bulk of the course is built around a design and fabrication project for a local non- profit or Cowley-linked office, organization, or facility. Specific fabrication and design skills and techniques utilized will vary depending on the needs of the project. Additionally, students investigate careers in the design and fabrication of user-interactive performative spaces, and methods of marketing their technical theatre skills in non-theatre settings.

    Description: Students in this course receive instruction and gain the necessary skills to produce sound welds on ferrous structural shapes in various positions.     Description: Students will be introduced to the basics of mathematical principles and Layout procedures used in welding. Students will receive instruction in the principles and use of mathematics as it relates to on the job and used in project layout. Additionally, students will receive instruction in the steps and procedures used in the layout process, equipment and how to use blueprints.

    Description: Upon completion of this course a student will be able to successfully produce documentation of test specimens and compare that information to codes and standards to determine component usability. Students are expected to become proficient in the identification of various common alloys and apply precautions in selecting correct filler metals for welding. Students will be introduced to automated shape cutting and become familiar with working with images, designing shapes and dimensioning, editing cut paths and cutting parts using plasma arc cutting equipment.
