Cowley College has nearly 600 courses approved by the Kansas Board of Regents which coincide with the many pathways and programs of study that lead towards a degree, vocational certificate, or industry recognized credential or skill. Cowley advisors will help you design a program to meet your educational and career goals.

Refer to the Cowley College “Programs of Study ” to determine the course requirements and recommended elective courses for each degree or certificate for each specified pathway. Not all courses are offered each semester. Students should visit with their advisor for information on courses that are offered on a rotational basis.  Kansas Regents System Wide Transfer Shared Number (KRSN)

Courses that currently have a Kansas Regents Shared Number (Common Course Numbers designated by the Kansas System Wide Transfer Course Matrix) are indicated by their associated KRSN number. The learning outcomes and competencies in these courses meet or exceed the learning outcomes and competencies specified by the Kansas Core Outcomes Groups project for these courses as approved by the Kansas Board of Regents. 

The Kansas Regents Transfer KS portal provides information on Systemwide Transfer (SWT) courses for Kansas public colleges and universities. Systemwide Transfer courses transfer to any Kansas public institution offering an equivalent course. The decision of lower division courses to count toward upper division credit hours is at the discretion of the receiving institution.

    NOTE: Courses not listed as KS Excel in CTE Initiative allow High School students in Kansas and Oklahoma to qualify for the AcceleRATE which is a discounted flat-rate tuition amount for dual enrolled high school students. Some of the courses in technical programs fall under the AcceleRATE pricing and do not qualify for the Excel in CTE

    Description: Instruction consists of 375 clock hours in professional development and effective communications, human relations, microbiology, infection control procedures, and guidelines as well as first aid procedures for the industry. Sanitary rules and regulations governing the cosmetology profession are taught. Students will also perform services in client consultation using design decisions considerations, selecting the correct hairstyle to fit the client using design principles and elements, scalp and hair analysis, shampooing, conditioning, scalp treatments, and hair cutting by length arrangements and design principles. Long hair design techniques will also be included in the class.

    Prerequisite(s): An applicant must have attained the age of 17 years and be a graduate of an accredited high school, or have passed the GED (General Education Development) test.  Additionally, student must meet or exceed minimum reading score of 255 according to the ACCUPLACER Next Gen Reading test or ACT Reading score of 18 or higher; Associate degree or higher required to waive the reading test. 

     

    NOTE: The dual enrolled high school program also requires an applicant to be at least 17 years of age at time of admission.

Students will style wigs and hair pieces to meet the client’s needs. Student will also be able to perform all infection control and safety issues associated with all the services listed above.

    Description: Instruction consists of 350 clock hours in the history of nails, the structure of both the skin & nails, anatomy, physiology, chemistry, & electricity as it pertains to the nail industry. The students will gain knowledge in infection control procedures, first aid procedures, sanitation & disinfection procedures that are governed by the State board. Students will be trained in manicuring, pedicuring, electric filing, nail tips & wraps, acrylic nails, UV & LED gels, & nail art. The students will also gain an understanding of the salon business, how to seek employment in the nail industry, & job training. The course will prepare the stuents for the State board exams. 
     

    Prerequisite(s): An applicant must be 18 years of age, have a college level reading score, and pass the Nail Technology entrance application.

    Description: The Controlled F.O.R.C.E.® Team deals primarily with the issue associated with hand-to-hand confrontations. Unlike most programs, M.A.C.H.™ holds do not concentrate on a set number of locks or holds, or simply teach theory without application. The M.A.C.H.™ hold techniques teach a student how to subdue an opponent in a safe and controlled manner, rather than rely on pure strength to overcome the opponent. Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to demonstrate the appropriate holds and take downs taught in the National Controlled FORCE (First Offensive Reaction in a Controlled Environment) curriculum. The student will be certified as a Level I Controlled FORCE user.

    Description: The Emergency Medical Technician 1 (EMT 1) and EMT 2 courses are designed to be taken consecutively to provide students with an academic and working knowledge to become Kansas certified EMTs and to provide basic life support patient care. It provides the basic concepts of emergency care, which are needed to function as an EMT. Students must successfully complete the EMT 1 and EMT 2 courses with at least a “C” grade in consecutive semesters to be eligible for state board certification. This class will be helpful for other health care fields and is a prerequisite for the Paramedic course.

    Description: This is the third course of the paramedic technical curriculum and continues to prepare the student for progression through the program. The student will continue to develop more complex depth and comprehensive breadth in the principles and practice of paramedic-level patient care. 

    Students will be scheduled to perform in the hospital environment, psychiatric facilities and other healthcare sites approximately 40 hours each week. This class will typically require a minimum of 11 12 weeks, depending upon clinical scheduling requirements. Nursing and other specialty units may be utilized, including but not limited to: Intensive Care Units, Operating and Post Anesthesia Recovery Room, Emergency Departments, Labor and Delivery Rooms, Pediatric Units, Psychiatric Unit, Endoscopy Lab, and Respiratory Therapy.

    Description: This is the fourth and final course of the paramedic technical curriculum and prepares the student for program completion. The student will continue to develop more complex depth and comprehensive breadth in the principles and practice of paramedic-level patient care, and will attain entry-level competence as a paramedic by the end of this course.  

    The student will be scheduled to perform in the pre-hospital environment with an organization which provides advanced life support ambulance treatment and transportation (Type I license with the Kansas Board of Emergency Medical Service). Students will perform under the direct supervision of Kansas Certified Paramedics for a total of 500 750 hours, depending upon the student’s needs and abilities. Emphasis will be placed on the proper performance of all pre-hospital patient care and clinical decision-making abilities. Students will also prepare to pass the national registry certification examination.
